Recently, a UK registered financial institution has declared that all "US persons" which includes any Americans ordinarily resident in the UK have to close their accounts by a certain date. The reason has to do with a US tax reporting requirement which the firm has declared would be more expensive than closing the accounts. The RRA 1976 specifically mentions nationality and nation of origin. Is it possible to challenge the closure on the basis of this act????

I doubt it. In this case the financial institution might argue it was justifiable under section 1(b)(ii) of the act.

Yes, I see your point. They have already stated that the reason is economic, even though firms in the US are tolerating that expense. Who makes the determination whether cost is a justifiable reason? Would it be the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC)?
