Delplorable Prisons

Postby dls » Tue Dec 11, 2012 8:36 am

A recent report on Lincoln prison must be pretty disturbing.
That now house 50% more than they were built for.
One prisoner 'stayed on' for nine years after his sentence was complete!!
See

The report will no doubt shortly appear at the official web-site at

Don't you find it contradictory that the report says the relations between staff and prisoners is good, yet the staff must be the very people who send those who won't fess up to who the bullies are to isolation cells?

No, not in the terms you present.
The report itself had not been added to the site, so I do not quite know yet.

@john_storer on twitter seems to have looked into this. He says ""case...not so sinister. He was released, recalled some years later nad has been at prison awaiting deportation as deemed a risk to public safety. Don't know the original offence but understand he got a very lengthy sentence"

This is not to downplay what appear to be, as you say, deplorable conditions in prisons.

But still, it seems they are better than some care homes. :?

The important question here hasn't been answered. What is the re-offending rate? If these conditions mean people don't want to go back to prison and thus don't re-offend then its done its job.

That may be an important question, but it is not the important question.
But justice must be consistent. Unless the choice of prison is made by the judge as part of the sentence, then all prisons must meet the same standard... and that standard needs to be set by statute, not on the whim of a prison guard.

The report is on the site, it was there when I posted last night. There are charts with figures too.

I have a particular interest in the outcome of this prison, what you might call an "outside" interest. You might recall some of my posts which are no longer on this site, hence my comment due to my "outside" knowledge of what some of the staff are really like.

You might find the video footage on BBC of the Chief Inspector interesting, then watch the footage given shortly after of the new Governor of Lincoln Prison.
